What is this?
This is the first digital vedabase that has been 100% verified against scanned photographs of the original printed books.
Every single book was compared, word by word, against 68 scanned PDFs of the actual first editions published during Srila Prabhupada's lifetime. Where the digital text differed from the printed original, it was corrected. The scans are the sole authority — not any digital source.
How it was built
The starting point was the digital text from srila_prabhupada_vedabase_original, a GitHub repository that aimed to preserve Prabhupada's teachings in their originally published form. This was the best digital source available.
However, when we compared this text against scanned photos of the actual printed first editions, we found that post-1977 editorial changes had crept into the digital text. Some changes were stylistic, but others altered Prabhupada's philosophical meaning.
We then corrected every difference — replacing entire book sections with text extracted directly from the scan PDFs, or applying precise surgical patches where only minor differences existed — until the digital text matched the originals exactly.
Coverage
The only books not compared are 4 posthumous compilations with no original edition: A Second Chance, Life Comes from Life, Light of the Bhagavata, The Path of Perfection.

Technical Process
Phase 1: Diff Identification
Every book in the vedabase was compared against scanned photos of the original printed editions. Differences between the digital text and the originals were identified using automated diffing with manual verification.
Phase 2: Full Book Replacement
For books with significant editorial changes, the entire section was replaced with text extracted directly from the original-edition scan PDFs. Text was extracted using PyMuPDF (fitz), a high-precision PDF text extraction library, preserving IAST diacritics and formatting.
Phase 3: Surgical Patching
For books with only minor differences, individual corrections were applied using custom Python scripts with a multi-strategy matching algorithm. The scripts handled IAST multi-byte UTF-8 diacritics, whitespace normalization, and smart quote variants. Similarity analysis used Jaccard indexes and trigram comparison (difflib, SequenceMatcher) to ensure precision.
Phase 4: Verification
Every correction was verified against the scanned originals. Known philosophical shift phrases — specific wordings that Prabhupada used but editors changed in later editions — were checked to confirm the original text was fully restored.
